East End Winery Tour November 2014

Bill Writes:
Sunday, November 16th marked the annual return of a favorite Empire Car Club event: the Long Island Winery Cruise. Now enjoying its fifth year, this East End driving event is always reliably popular with the membership for two reasons. For one, it is the last “driving destination” event of the year, providing a great reason for our members to drive their classic cars one last time before we hibernate our vehicles for the long winter. Secondly, who can resist joining their fellow club members for a scenic drive through winding East End roads and stopping off for a winery visit, a hearty lunch and always a perfect spot (or maybe two) for a fabulous photo featuring both car and owner. The 2014 edition of the LI Winery Cruise offered all these features and more.

Amidst a brisk but sunny day with the last colorful remnants of fall foliage, our itinerary was creatively designed by long time club member Chris. Chris mapped out a scenic tour for the entire day so we could caravan on country roads and enjoy the beautiful East End. In an encore of last year, we met for breakfast at Trackside Café in Speonk, a historic train station converted into a charming retro luncheonette. Next was a brief stop at our first photo-op, a stark scene at a bridge and inlet along Westhampton Beach. Our members then enjoyed a scenic drive along local roads from south shore to north fork eventually arriving at our winery destination. A visit to Macari Vineyards for an enjoyable wine tasting was followed by a second photo op featuring each car sitting against a backdrop of the vineyards. Our last stop was lunch at Joe’s Garage, a Riverhead restaurant decorated in a clever auto racing theme where we all enjoyed delicious pub food. Thanks to Larry for suggesting our lunch destination.

Our finale to a year of exciting car-centered events was a thoroughly enjoyable day for the 16 club attendees including John and Kevin journeying all the way from New Jersey, Mike from Manhattan, and welcoming two of our newest members Tom and Joe with their 63 Pontiac. Now our classic automobiles return to their garages until our Captree Dust Off in early spring….unless of course it is a mild winter.

A big thank you to all that participated and to Chris for creating the itinerary and route for us and supplying the maps! While it’s sad to see the year end, we look forward to more adventures in the coming year.
