Hudson Valley Fall Foliage Weekend October 2014

Bill & Peter Report:
Empire Region hosted our annual autumn club event “Fall Foliage” during the weekend of October 17-19 in Upstate New York with the Nutmeg Region of Connecticut as our honored guests. Anyone who has visited the Catskill and Mid-Hudson regions in October can attest it is a picturesque part of the state at its “Fall Foliage” peak.

We all joined together after a day of travel for our Friday night pizza party kickoff at George’s cabin. This was a festive evening as we heard about everyone’s adventure getting to the motel. Some of the Nutmeg Region’s members caravanned together with only a slight hiccup occurring with Richard’s 60 Lincoln. Neil, having had much experience with his 66 Cadillac spending time in rehab so often, quickly addressed the problem, even though he had to back up his 66 Cadillac off the entrance ramp to the freeway to get to him. Now that’s a true friend! Two of our Empire members also caravanned up, luckily without a hitch. Patrick donated a bucket full of car wash/care products that were raffled off to a lucky winner.

Following an early morning caravan to the Ambrosia Diner in Catskill for a delicious breakfast on Saturday, members toured Olana, the historic landmark that was once the home of artist Frederic Church. The majestic estate displays some of the artist’s priceless works while showcasing stunning views of the Hudson River and its crisp fall landscapes. Then it was on to downtown Hudson for a luncheon and mini car show, generously hosted by two of our upstate members, allowing for an intimate display of the attendees classic vehicles. In a fun contest, members were asked to vote for the classic car that best fit a unique distinction in such categories as “Car most likely to be driven by a super hero” and “Car most likely to drive a Supremes-like girl group to their concert.” Afterwards, we strolled around the downtown antique shops while others had the option to tour the nearby Volunteer Firefighter Museum. While downtown some of us met John Waters at his book signing and got his autograph and picture with him. Upon seeing John Waters we had to console Larry as I think he was hyper ventilating from excitement. After we got Larry to calm down and focus, he quickly grabbed a book and ran over to John to get his autograph and picture which I am certain he will cherish for a very long time. After all the excitement from the day we headed back to our motel rooms to unwind and get ready to reunite for a fabulous evening of cocktails, dinner, car show awards, and raffle prizes at Tatiana’s Restaurant in Catskill. We had two separate raffles at the dinner; Empire Region did the 50/50 cash raffle while the Nutmeg Chapter held their own raffle with lots of prizes. The two chapters worked so well together and all the members mingled with each other just like one big happy family. It was great to see the chapters come together at our event. Patrick donated lighted key chains for every guest, these are so handy and are a must have for our vintage cars. The table center pieces were donated by Mike W. These were cardboard 50’s and 60s cars that once assembled were great for the tables and in the passenger compartment we placed candy for our guests. While most of our guests enjoyed a treat or two Gaz got carried away. I don’t know how many treats he ate but by the volume of the empty wrappers on his plate I would say he must have a huge sweet tooth that needed attention badly.

Following a Sunday morning bagel breakfast, again at George’s cabin, it was time for the weekend’s main event. Members drove their classic cars caravan style downstate to arrive at the annual Mills Mansion Car Show. Located in Staatsburg, NY, this historic site was the elegant country estate home of Ogden Mills and his wife Ruth Livingston Mills. The mansion sits atop a spectacular overlook of the Hudson River and the Catskill Mountains, but the grassy field that sits between the estate and the river is the setting for one of the largest and best attended car shows in New York State. The Empire and Nutmeg chapters were well represented by over 20 cars with more than two dozen members in attendance, the largest car club attendance at the show.

Overall, 2014 was the most successful Fall Foliage event in Empire Car Club’s history, with many memories and comradery with our sister chapter.

I would like to personally thank everyone for attending and contributing to this event. A lot of work and planning goes into these big events and our chapter really showed off their talents on this weekend. Special thanks to the following people: Sam for setting up the weekend itinerary, motel and restaurant arrangements, and coordinating the lunch & car show with two generous members of our chapter; George, for his strong support in assisting Peter with arrangements and preparations and hosting us at his cabin; David for his seamless handling of all money matters at our Saturday night dinner; John for his usual expert photography throughout the weekend: and finally to Steve and the Nutmeg Chapter for contributing their time, raffles, and to their members for attending.

If you could not join us this weekend, we sincerely hope you will join us for Fall Foliage 2015 because this popular events simply gets better and better each year.
