On Sunday, March 15th, we braved the cold windy sunny day and headed to Brooklyn’s New York Transit Museum. We were happy to see that we had an excellent turn out for this event. We had members from Manhattan, Brooklyn, Long Island, New Jersey and as far away as Kingston NY!

Upon arrival we gathered in the gift shop and found that the museum had a 12 noon tour at no extra charge. We dominated this tour with our members, but we allowed a few New Yorkers and some tourists to join as well (LOL). Our tour guide, Natasha, was incredible. She was fun, knowledgeable, and fit right in with us.

The museum is housed in the disused former subway station four Court Street, in downtown Brooklyn, and had trains there dating from the beginning of the system to modern times. All of the trains were open for us to go inside, have a seat, and read the original advertisements of that era. Trains from the 1939 and 1964 Worlds Fair were there on display as well.

We learned how the NYC subway system started out with 3 independent companies (IRT, BMT, and IND) which later merged into the current system. One interesting fact I didn’t realize was that the ‘Letter’ trains were wider then the ‘Number’ trains. This is because the number lines started first and the tunnels were made smaller as they did not expect the system would quickly become so popular.

After our hour and half tour we strolled around the museum before heading to Junior’s for lunch. Junior’s is a fun place to eat with a lively retro type atmosphere a few blocks from the museum. When we arrived they had our table set up with a fruit cup to start our meal. The service was quick, but maybe a little to fast for us as we were in no rush to eat and run. If you put your fork down to rest they were right there, ready to take your plate! There was plenty of food and everything was delicious including the ever-famous Junior’s cheesecake!

Thank you to all who were able to attend. It was a fantastic day and was great to see everyone.
