East End Winery Tour November 2014

by Roger on Dec.05, 2014, under Club News

Bill Writes:
Sunday, November 16th marked the annual return of a favorite Empire Car Club event: the Long Island Winery Cruise. Now enjoying its fifth year, this East End driving event is always reliably popular with the membership for two reasons. For one, it is the last “driving destination” event of the year, providing a great reason for our members to drive their classic cars one last time before we hibernate our vehicles for the long winter. Secondly, who can resist joining their fellow club members for a scenic drive through winding East End roads and stopping off for a winery visit, a hearty lunch and always a perfect spot (or maybe two) for a fabulous photo featuring both car and owner. The 2014 edition of the LI Winery Cruise offered all these features and more.

by Roger on Nov.06, 2014, under Outing

Bill & Peter Report:
Empire Region hosted our annual autumn club event “Fall Foliage” during the weekend of October 17-19 in Upstate New York with the Nutmeg Region of Connecticut as our honored guests. Anyone who has visited the Catskill and Mid-Hudson regions in October can attest it is a picturesque part of the state at its “Fall Foliage” peak.

4th Annual Drive-In Movie Night 2014

by Roger on Sep.05, 2014, under Party

Peter writes:
Out 4th Annual Drive In Movie Night was a rousing success! We had outstanding attendance and the weather could not have been more perfect.

Members started to arrive by 3pm and we parked all the Buicks in the driveway, well, except for Mike’s Pontiac and Patrick’s Charger. We let the Pontiac slide since the first movie featured a Pontiac Trans Am but I can’t explain Patrick’s Charger, he must of sneaked it in there when we weren’t manning the parking (I guess he needs to be watched now). Chris had his two Buick Wagon Pace cars proudly parked on the front lawn for display and the Plymouth Gran Coupe on the side of garage all decked out.

It was very nice to see Joe P from Ft Lauderdale, and Michael and David long term Empire Members in attendance. I also want to mention the two New Jersey couples that drove over bridges to attend our event; John and Kevin, and Craig and Kevin. Glad to see all of you.

As members entered the yard they quickly discovered what the two movies were as Chris had posters set up and a partially nude poster of Burt Reynold’s. For those who were unable to attend the movies were ‘Smokey and the Bandit” and “Cannonball Run”. Each car load of guests also received a lovely promotional Buick map donated by Chris.

There were, of course, our beautiful cars parked out front. To mention a few: George came in his new 59 Oldsmobile, Charles’ really nice Chrysler Salon (when was the last time you saw one of these), Andy’s Aunt’s low mileage Buick, and Mike’s Buick Wagon, plus so many others (Pictures attached)

Dinner was served a little bit behind schedule because we were so involved in chatting and admiring the cars. But not to worry the caterer came on time and set up everything for us. We had Fried Chicken, BBQ Pulled Pork, BBQ Brisket, Mac and Cheese, Beans, Cole Slaw, and Corn Bread for a finger licking southern dinner to set our mood before the movie started.

By about 6:30 the camera was rolling and our first feature movie started. Intermission time we had a sheet cake, cookies, and coffee. The cake was decorated to the theme of the movie and I must say the baker did a fabulous job for us.

Our 50/50 raffle was awarded during intermission. $100.00 was the prize and Tom M was the lucky winner and the cap Patrick donated was won by Kevin.

But wait, there were more raffle prizes to give away after the movie! So if you stayed for the second movie you had a chance to win the Burt Reynolds poster and a mystery prize! The majority of the guests stayed for the end of the second movie and Patrick won the Burt Reynolds poster and Andy won the mystery prize. The mystery prize was the original Cosmopolitan magazine with the Burt Reynolds centerfold! Those lucky boys!

I would like to thank Chris for hosting our 4th annual Drive In Movie Night. Chris worked tirelessly preparing for the day, he donated prizes, created a library of automobile books, set up marvelous candy dishes, and worked with George and I planning the event. Also thank you to George for his assistance in the planning and shopping, John P and Mike W for taking pictures, Sam for bringing and setting up the camera, sound system, and screen, and Mike S for doing a superb job with the 50/50. All team players and it showed as the event went off without a flaw. And one last thank you to our members for continuing to show your interest and support in our events. We can’t do this without all of you!

It was a great evening and it was nice to see everyone get together. I look forward to our next event on September 7th at Larry’s house.

There’s a HUGE gallery after the jump…

LIFF Men’s Hot Shorts Night 2014

by Roger on Jul.29, 2014, under Outing

Peter Writes:

On Thursday night July 24th we attended the Long Island Film Festival’s (LIFF) “Men’s Hot Shorts Night” at the Huntington Cinema Arts Centre.

I am happy to say that we had an nice mix of classic cars to display and a good participation from our members.

The movies (several shorts), were enjoyable and they had a very nice hot buffet in the outdoor garden after the exhibition, with a DJ and Pina Coladas, all for a discounted price for our members.

The LIFF was very happy that we attended and they offered us discounted prices any time we would like to co-sponsor a film again. It was a lot of fun and I hope to do some more events with them in the near future.
