Tech Meet at Patrick’s 3/24/13

by Roger on Apr.04, 2013, under Outing

Mike W. writes:
Tech Meets are a longtime Empire event staple. They’re a great source for automotive maintenance information, resource sharing and, of course, the requisite tip swapping. Nobody is better qualified to conduct a great tech meet than our own Patrick. He did the honors again this year at his classic repair shop in Farmingville. Patrick’s family has been in Farmingville since the late 1800’s and this family business also has a long history. It was started by Patrick’s grandfather in the current location as a school bus fleet company before WWII. Patrick’s father then preceded him in the current general automotive maintenance/repair business. Lots of automotive ambience here, from the pit that the cars straddle to big red vintage tool cases and parts racks. Having Sam and Mike’s ’50 Cadillac of in the shop lent a nice period touch as well.
We had approximately a dozen members who were greeted by coffee and donuts. Peter graciously picked up a couple of us outliers at the Ronkonkoma railroad station.

Patrick jumped right in and covered an extensive category of automotive maintenance and repair issues, including core tune-up criteria (injectors, air sensor, checking spark etc.) on his Hyundai shop car. He went over oil filter changes over the years from the tractor type on the post war Caddy to the environmentally sensitive versions in use today. Timing belt and catalytic converter technicalities were covered with some entertaining case histories. We had a general repair Q&A as well with much ground covered. Patrick delved into diagnostic code interpretation and the enormous and rather expensive manuals needed to interpret and deal with modern computer based auto maintenance. Mike also held court in the pit showing off the details of his Caddy’s period suspension.

I chipped in with a detailing demo on how to clay bar your paint and we focused on Patrick’s ’03 Infiniti M45. This was an easy candidate being in such good shape. I did the hood and headlights and there were plenty of questions asked. I touched on micro-fiber towel use/cleaning, and the current discussion on E15 gasoline and its implications. The bathroom-cleaning utensil I demonstrated for those tight spots was apparently open to various interpretations.

Well, it was fun, highly informative and Patrick certainly knows his stuff! Most of us motored on the Brick House Brewery in Patchogue for a convivial lunch afterwards. The high point came with a surprise birthday cake for Sam from Mike that was shared all around (chocolate with mocha-yum!)-A very nice gesture, indeed.

Bravo Patrick – thanks again!!

And thanks to Mike W. and Lenny M. for taking the pictures of the event!

Holiday Party at the Davenport Press: 12/12

by Roger on Nov.18, 2012, under Meeting, Party

Thank you to all who attended our 2012 Holiday Party and a special thanks to John P. for taking all the wonderful pictures.

We had a record turn out this year and the Davenport Press was once again a great host for our gathering.

This was a fun and full year. We welcomed some new/potential members, started new events, and some of our members added new cars to their collection.

I am looking forward to another year serving you as Vice President.

Have a happy and safe holiday season.

Happy New Year!!

Peter
