Saturday March 18th was a great day for our visit to Bob’s Old Spokes Museum/Auto Orphanage, dedicated to the memory of the fabulous Hudson. This is one little jewel of a museum tucked away on rural Old Route 22 in the hamlet of New Smithville Pa.

Empire Lambda member, Wade, set up this special event for us with the museum owner. George chauffeured Chris, Joe and me (swinging into Manhattan –thanks) in his comfy Lincoln Town Car. This was my first much needed escape from NYC in a while. We met up with more of our guys and fueled up with a hearty pre-museum breakfast at the Starlight Diner in Allentown.

When we landed at the Orphanage we got a warm greeting from the caretakers who could not have been more gracious. More of our group members and friends showed up, for a good total turn out of fourteen.

What gorgeous cars!! I’ve always loved the step down generation and as a kid I admired their sleek looks on the road. Several stunners from that ’48 to ’54 generation were there as well as older beauties, e.g. Agnes Moorehead’s ’41 Woodie Wagon. There were also two knockout interlopers, a ’47 Pontiac and a ’60 Chrysler 300 F –convertibles both. I liked the Twin H Power six on a stand and the vintage diagnostic equipment. There was an impressive showing of pre-war Hudsons from the twenties and thirties – all in fine condition.

I donated two vintage Dinky Hudson toy cars from my collection, a ’48 and a rare ’57 as I felt they should be there. Do check out our pictures for stunners from the final years after the Nash/Hudson merger. Note the very rare Hudson Rambler wagon and Hudson’s extravagantly styled Nash bodied ’55, ’56 and ’57 models, all with wild continental kits.

We hated to leave but we certainly made a few new friends. Finally, we enjoyed a festive late lunch at Fegley’s Brew Works in Bethlehem. This was a perfect ending to the day and the handsome young waiters didn’t hurt. A fun event – all agreed.
