2014 Morgan Park Glen Cove Car Show

by Roger on Jul.01, 2014, under Outing

Peter writes:
A few of us headed over to Morgan Park in Glen Cove for the car show hosted by Gold Coast Cruisers on Sunday June 29th.

The park overlooks the Long Island Sound with rolling hills, lots of trees, and you can see the Bronx across the water. They had live entertainment, a small swap meet, food court, swimming in the sound, and lots of raffle tickets.

This was such a splendid day and I would estimate about 1,000 beautiful cars were there. We had a very relaxing day sitting under a nice shade tree, browsing the cars, taking a walk down by the water and up the hill to the picnic area.

Afterwards we took route 25a east and stopped at an outdoor Fish and Clam restaurant in Northport for dinner.

2014 Huntington Gay Pride Parade and BBQ

by Roger on Jun.17, 2014, under Outing

Peter Writes:
The Empire Region participated in the Huntington Parade on Saturday June 14th and afterwards joined the LI Ravens at Nuts & Bolts for their Post Parade BBQ.

The weather was perfect. We had 5 cars in the parade and two members volunteered to march in front of us with our banner.

Parade Order:

Mike & Charles with Banner
Sam’s 59 Buick
John’s 51 Mercury
Peter’s 62 T-Bird
Tom & Joe’s 63 Pontiac
George’s 86 Cadillac

We got there by 10am to stage the cars then were able to relax and get some breakfast before the parade started at 12pm. There was lots to see and do and the 2 hours went very quickly.

After the parade we had reserved parking by the field and spent some time walking around and watching the entertainment. Some of us headed over to a diner for a light snack since we had some time before the BBQ. According to Newsday there were 18,000 spectators at the parade – great attendance and good exposure for us.

Around 4pm we met at Nuts & Bolts to join the LI Ravens for their BBQ. The Ravens had parking spaces blocked for us in front of the bar along the fence so our cars were together and secured.

The Ravens put on a really nice, free, BBQ with plenty of hamburgers, hot dogs, salads, watermelon, and ice cream out on the patio. We thanked the Ravens for including us and look forward to doing another event with them in the future.

It was so nice to be able to relax and mingle after a long day at the parade. What I like about these events is that you never feel alone. We hang out as a group and then if you want you can go off on your own but always know that there is a home base to go back to.

Mike W took the train out from NYC for the parade and he became the car whore of the day. He got to ride in the 59 Buick, 62 TBird, and the 86 Cadillac. This is one of the perks of joining without your car, you can take a ride in a variety of vintage cars, and he did too!

John D gets the award of the day for the most change of clothes. Every time I saw him it seemed he had a different shirt on. I will have to check his trunk next time and see how big a valise he has in there. I think he has more outfits than Hal King.

All in all it was a really fun day and everyone had a great time. I always enjoy the company of our members very much and appreciate those who attended. A big thank you to Mike and Charles who volunteered to march in front of the cars with the banner!

Nutmeg Region New England Air Museum Show– June 2013

by Roger on Jun.07, 2013, under Outing

Peter Writes:
Our contingent from the Empire Region headed up to Connecticut the first weekend of June to join the Nutmeg Region for the 27th annual New England Air Museum Car Show in Windsor Locks. We arrived on Saturday afternoon at the Days Inn, had a bite to eat, and then assembled in the parking lot before we ventured out for the evening.

Nutmeg’s Travis (he of the fabulous ’61 Falcon of Hemmings’ fame) and partner John arranged for us to all meet at the Pleasant Valley Drive-In Movie. After some lovely, open air cruising on backcountry roads, we arrived at 6:30, joined up with the Nutmeg crew and drove into the Drive-In as a group. The theater was delighted to see our cars and made sure that we all could park together in between the existing polls where the speakers used to be held. The speakers are long gone now as FM radios are used for sound during the show. As we set up our lawn chairs, tables, and coolers we took advantage of the daylight to snap some pictures.

Morgan Park Car Show 6/24/12

by Roger on Jun.29, 2012, under Outing

Peter Lauria reports:

The Morgan Park Car Show in Glen Cove was held on Sunday June 24th. This is a beautiful park overlooking the Long Island Sound. There were at least 400 cars, vendors, and food concessions.

A few of us attended this show and we were able to park together.

One of our new members, Rich, arrived in a really nice original 1966 Mustang. This is a low mileage, 50k, car from an old lady in Hampton Bays and was its first appearance with the Empire Region.

It was a warm day so most of the time we sat under a tree and admired the cars and people watched.

There were so many nice cars and I would say as good as any AACA show.

If you haven’t been to this show plan on going next year as its a nice show in a great location. Swimming is also permitted at the beach if you need to cool off as well. There was also a band playing, and raffles throughout the day.
