30th Annual Lambda Literary Open House, 2/2013

by Roger on Feb.16, 2013, under Outing

Mike W. reports:

Lambda’s longest running and one of its most consistently popular events celebrated its 30th Anniversary this month.

As always, it was hosted by Empire Region’s Steve H. who has an extensive automotive literature collection with more than 13,000 original sales brochures covering hundreds of makes from 1899 through 1995. This beautiful and carefully catalogued assemblage is why Steve is the go-to resource for no less than The New York Times then they’re in need of illustrations of antique and collectable cars.

This year thirty-nine (39) enthusiastic members and friends descended on Steve’s Manhattan apartment overlooking Madison Square Park (what a view of the Empire State and Chrysler Buildings among others!). We had attendees from Alabama, Virginia, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Connecticut, upstate New York as well as the New York Metro area and everyone had a great time gabbing and looking up their favorite years/makes.

Our guys researched such disparate categories as the ‘50s Imperial, Lincoln and Cadillac luxo-barges; Saoutchik, Leon Rubay and LeBaron custom body builders of the ‘20s and many long-forgotten makes like Paige, Dagmar, Apperson and Hupmobile.

I focused on the gorgeous artwork by Fitzpatrick and Van Kaufman in the 1960’s Pontiac brochures. Afterward many of us strolled through the famous Flat-Iron district and continued the camaraderie over dinner at a local barbecue restaurant. Steve, thanks again from your Lambda/Empire buddies for hosting this great event!
