Empire Fall Foliage Weekend 2016

by Roger on Nov.24, 2016, under Club News, Outing

Mike Writes:
Spectacular weather and gorgeous peak Fall colors were the hallmarks for Empire’s 2016 Fall Foliage event. This year the venue was moved to the Hunter Inn at scenic Hunter Mountain in the Catskill’s Greene County. On Friday afternoon, I met up with Patrick and his vintage Charger in the Bronx at a Citgo/DD stop on the Hutch. It was a lovely drive upstate for our mini-caravan. The leafy red carpet extending up the hillsides really glowed in that warm autumn sunlight!

I knew this would be my last shot this year at either top down or tops off motoring. The Firebird T/A convertible and I both enjoyed the open air- including on the trip home.

We had good member participation and our weekend kicked off at the Friday night pizza party. Inspecting everyone’s cool rides always goes with that. David K’s impressive 1968 Pontiac Executive “woodie” wagon was a fresh sight. George debuted another new baby, a 1970 Ford LTD sedan in amazing original condition. It was great that our NJ members drove up and some of the Nutmeg fellas stayed over too – adding to the fun. There were various options for spending Saturday.

After the breakfast, a bunch of us headed out to the beautiful Hunter Mt. ski resort. Fortunately, nobody fell off as we rode the lift to the top – what a view! Our hike descending down the mountain was going well until my thigh muscles gave up. Alas, I was saved with a little help from my friends. Those repeated immobilized ‘face down’ periods post assorted eye surgeries are now being compensated for with more exercise.

Next on the Saturday agenda was a fabulous feast graciously hosted by David and Michael. Their lovely historic country home actually dates 1781. You would never know that the tranquil meadow and stream in back was the scene of terrible damage done by Hurricane Sandy. The destruction of a number of their vintage cars was traumatic and debris was deposited everywhere. David and Mike also now had a new baby, a 1970 Cadillac Deville 4 door hardtop – another newbie in remarkable original condition. Thanks again guys!

The Saturday night dinner was festive (we are Gay after all!) and the food at the Hunter Inn was excellent. Sunday morning looked perfect for the Mills mansion car show. A hose was available for pre-show fluffing. George led us all on a beautiful curving back road tour to the Staatsburg “Gathering of the Cars”. I loved that. Sam did his usual excellent job with the club’s show arrangements. We therefore have the best perch over looking the Hudson. Our Nutmeg buddies turned out in force to again make us the biggest club presence. A stunning newly restored 1959 Ford Ranchero came with them. Steve T.’s knockout 1964 Bonneville really should be mine! Lots of pretty cars decorated the mansion grounds as always and without snow this time. Of course, the best part of this event is always the reconnecting with good friends.

Thanks to George and our Board for all their efforts in planning our event!!

10th Annual “Fall Foliage” Event October 2015

by Roger on Nov.03, 2015, under Club News

Mike Writes:

One of the most successful and enduring events held by LCCI’s Empire region has been the “Fall Foliage” weekend. Held annually in October in the gorgeous Hudson River Valley/Catskill Mountain area of New York State, it is understandably popular. We enjoy the full color peak of the autumn foliage change in one of America’s most beautiful locales. Mountain vistas and lovely vintage architecture on winding country roads are highlights. The stunning river views are virtually unchanged since popularized by the artists of the 19th Century Hudson River School of Painting.

We had a venue change for our 10th year, virtually taking over the huge Sunny Hill Resort/Thunderhart Golf Course near Greenville, NY in the picturesque Great Northern Catskills. We kicked off Friday night with a Pizza party held in a big bar/lounge with a classic juke box (with sort of a Twin Peaks vibe). We had lots of room to park/display our babies and our spacious rooms were all combined in one compound. Saturday, you had your choice of activities. We had a contingent caravan to lovely Hudson, NY for antiquing (big on mid-century too, but oh those prices!). There was also shopping in nearby villages and junk yards. For those who didn’t want to leave the resort there was golfing, paddle boats, hiking, obstacle course, and a tour of the military trucks/tanks were available. I was with the crew that checked out the Catskill country home of our members Sam and Mike with their cool garages and assorted beautiful cars including their a hefty new baby, a low mileage ‘75 Cadillac Sedan DeVille.

Breakfast and lunch was served at the resort and our Saturday night dinner was served in the lounge. There was lots of great food included throughout the weekend – our guys can eat!! During our Saturday night buffet there was a glimpse of gentle snow falling- a little surprise. The cars got a light icy patina for the morning which was probably the first time in many years since these cars saw snow. Every member that attended the Saturday night buffet received a goody bag packed with stuff in a Fall/Halloween themed bag, and no one bag was the same. I heard this got the members aroused and curious as to who got what and maybe there was some trading going on.

Sunday morning after breakfast we caravanned to the finale of the weekend to the spectacular “Gathering of the Cars” on the grounds of the historic Mills Mansion in Staasburgh, NY. Sitting atop a grassy hill right on the shore of the Hudson River and overlooking the Catskill Mountains, this is a truly striking place for a car show. Our buddies from Connecticut’s Nutmeg Region always joined us for the show bringing their fabulous rides. We had members from upstate and even Rhode Island (the latter with a knock-out ’49 Packard) join us as well. We – Lambda – are proud to have become the largest club presence at this impressive show. Alas, we got some snow teasers at the show but that just added to the atmosphere. Finally, after bidding adieu, a bunch of us caravanned through a special historic route and back home via the scenic Taconic Parkway.

Thanks to our Board members who spent many hours planning the weekend and visiting the resort and to Sam for coordinating the Sunday show.

Come join us in 2016!
