MacArthur Airport Car Show and Lunch at Larry’s House September 2014

by Roger on Nov.04, 2014, under Outing

Peter Writes:
Many of our members attended the MacArthur Airport Car Show in the morning which was was a busy show with many interesting cars to see.

Around 1:00PM, we all gathered at Larry’s house in Bay Shore for lunch. One thing I can say about Larry is that he really knows how to put on a luncheon. He had everything organized by the time we got there and he shopped and cooked for us too! Sunny, our mascot for the day, greeted us with licks and kisses too.

4th Annual Drive-In Movie Night 2014

by Roger on Sep.05, 2014, under Party

Peter writes:
Out 4th Annual Drive In Movie Night was a rousing success! We had outstanding attendance and the weather could not have been more perfect.

Members started to arrive by 3pm and we parked all the Buicks in the driveway, well, except for Mike’s Pontiac and Patrick’s Charger. We let the Pontiac slide since the first movie featured a Pontiac Trans Am but I can’t explain Patrick’s Charger, he must of sneaked it in there when we weren’t manning the parking (I guess he needs to be watched now). Chris had his two Buick Wagon Pace cars proudly parked on the front lawn for display and the Plymouth Gran Coupe on the side of garage all decked out.

It was very nice to see Joe P from Ft Lauderdale, and Michael and David long term Empire Members in attendance. I also want to mention the two New Jersey couples that drove over bridges to attend our event; John and Kevin, and Craig and Kevin. Glad to see all of you.

As members entered the yard they quickly discovered what the two movies were as Chris had posters set up and a partially nude poster of Burt Reynold’s. For those who were unable to attend the movies were ‘Smokey and the Bandit” and “Cannonball Run”. Each car load of guests also received a lovely promotional Buick map donated by Chris.

There were, of course, our beautiful cars parked out front. To mention a few: George came in his new 59 Oldsmobile, Charles’ really nice Chrysler Salon (when was the last time you saw one of these), Andy’s Aunt’s low mileage Buick, and Mike’s Buick Wagon, plus so many others (Pictures attached)

Dinner was served a little bit behind schedule because we were so involved in chatting and admiring the cars. But not to worry the caterer came on time and set up everything for us. We had Fried Chicken, BBQ Pulled Pork, BBQ Brisket, Mac and Cheese, Beans, Cole Slaw, and Corn Bread for a finger licking southern dinner to set our mood before the movie started.

By about 6:30 the camera was rolling and our first feature movie started. Intermission time we had a sheet cake, cookies, and coffee. The cake was decorated to the theme of the movie and I must say the baker did a fabulous job for us.

Our 50/50 raffle was awarded during intermission. $100.00 was the prize and Tom M was the lucky winner and the cap Patrick donated was won by Kevin.

But wait, there were more raffle prizes to give away after the movie! So if you stayed for the second movie you had a chance to win the Burt Reynolds poster and a mystery prize! The majority of the guests stayed for the end of the second movie and Patrick won the Burt Reynolds poster and Andy won the mystery prize. The mystery prize was the original Cosmopolitan magazine with the Burt Reynolds centerfold! Those lucky boys!

I would like to thank Chris for hosting our 4th annual Drive In Movie Night. Chris worked tirelessly preparing for the day, he donated prizes, created a library of automobile books, set up marvelous candy dishes, and worked with George and I planning the event. Also thank you to George for his assistance in the planning and shopping, John P and Mike W for taking pictures, Sam for bringing and setting up the camera, sound system, and screen, and Mike S for doing a superb job with the 50/50. All team players and it showed as the event went off without a flaw. And one last thank you to our members for continuing to show your interest and support in our events. We can’t do this without all of you!

It was a great evening and it was nice to see everyone get together. I look forward to our next event on September 7th at Larry’s house.

Pool Party at Patrick’s 2014

by Roger on Jul.29, 2014, under Party

Peter Writes:
On July 19th we held our annual Pool Party at Patrick’s lovely home. We have been doing this party over 16 years now, and it just seems to be getting better and better.

In spite of the cloudy day we had an amazing turn out. The water was warm but because of the clouds not too many of us jumped in, however the new pool liner made the water so inviting that some of us did take advantage of the water even for a little while.

Perhaps because we didn’t use the pool too much we had more time to mingle and enjoy the classic cars parked out front. I received a lot of feedback that this years party was one of the best they attended.

We had our two newest members, Gaz and David, join us for their first event. They are a nice addition to the club and I hope we see more of them at our upcoming events.

We did a 50/50 raffle and John N from NJ won the grand cash prize of $170.00! Congratulations to John. This was, I believe, one of our biggest 50/50 awards. John D and Patrick donated prizes to raffle off as well. One prize we almost had to give away as I guess no one wanted to go to a Duck’s baseball game, go figure. I am glad that Kevin and John finally won the prize and were able to attend the game on Sunday.

Christmas in July, yes you heard me right. We caught Patrick decorating the Christmas tree and snapped a few pictures. I guess its never to early to get a head start.

Thank you is in order for many of the participants that helped make this a memorable day. Big thanks to Patrick for hosting once again this year and opening your home to us. I thank George for helping me shop and price compare to get us the best deals on the food and beverages. Also big thanks to those who did the grilling on the BBQ and to Mike W for taking the pictures. Lastly thank you to those who helped in the clean up so we could leave Patrick’s house in somewhat decent order.

Flowerfield Car Show and Pizza May 2014

by Roger on Jun.06, 2014, under Outing

Peter Writes:
We had glorious weather at our event at Flowerfield Car Show on May 18th. The car show was very crowded, nice to finally see we are over the winter and the cars have come out. Most of us met at the car show and strolled around the many cars that were there and browsed the swap meet.

Afterwards we caravaned over to George’s house for an outdoor pizza party. As we drove up the long driveway the evil tree baby greeted us (I think she put a hoax on Tom and Joe’s 63 Pontiac as we had to jump start it before they left).

As usual, George arranged his many cars to be scattered all around the property for us to enjoy. He placed them in between the trees, on the great lawn, some in the garage, and others in back. It’s like going to a car show you never know what you are going to find or where you will find it.

We had a really good turn out for this event and everyone had a nice day just hanging out in George’s backyard over pizza. Thank you George and AJ for hosting!
